New Ways Are Hurting Old Businesses

New methods of doing business are taking customers away from traditional companies. The companies that are advancing have found proven ways to get ahead of their competitors. The evolving businesses have figured out better ways to cut costs and increase efficiency between stations. The methods used are focused on bettering supply chain methods and reducing overall process time. In other words, new age businesses are concentrating on getting their products from the supplier, to the customer. Firms intend to do this in the best and efficient way possible.

When businesses are focussing on efficiency, it becomes easier to respond towards product demand. When considering this in the chain of distribution, the supplier knows right away when certain inventory needs to be replaced. When there are less products available on the shelf. This way, demand is being matched in real time, and less storage space is being used for inventory. Less storage space is being used because there is a focus on just-in-time processes. Businesses strive to have inventory arrive as soon as its needed. When thinking in terms of benefits, firms are able to cut costs in the long run. Short term investments are made on technology and knowledge. However, the results do pay off, and the investments do get recouped. This is because firms are able to get the product out to their customers quicker. When they do this, the customers are satisfied because their needs are met. Satisfied customers bring growth to the company. [...]

The Decision Dynamic

Have you ever stepped back and watched team members respond to a decision? It’s really an interesting dynamic to watch.

I just watched a group of mid-level managers react to a decision that their management team made – three months ago. There clearly is not commitment amongst this group (once again, these are mid-level managers).

The background – The management team made a strategic decision that impacted everyone within this 75 person company. Somewhere along the decision-making-process-timeline, they thought it would be a good idea to gather input from their employees (novel idea, ha?). So, as a result, they conducted a series of focus groups, gathered employee input, and conducted a follow-up town hall meeting to respond to input gathered during the focus group sessions. [...]

Six Reasons to Start a Gift Basket Business

Are you thinking about starting a gift basket business? For the right person, this is a fulfilling way to make money doing something you love. Here are six reasons why you should start a gift basket business.

Set Your Own Hours

One thing that many people find appealing about starting a gift basket business is that you can set your hours. If you want to keep it as a part time job, limit the amount of orders that you take, or only work on the holidays such as Valentine’s Day. This will let you maximize your earnings while keeping it a part time job. Of course, many people will want to put more hours into it so it will result in a full time income. [...]

Sales Process Management – The Key to Unlocking the Potential of Your Sales Force

According to legendary quality expert W. Edwards Deming, there is one critical, but often overlooked, factor upon which success in almost any business endeavor depends. The ability of your sales team to meet and exceed your revenue targets will be determined largely by your awareness, or lack of awareness, of this one thing. It amazes me how many companies neglect it entirely, focusing instead on individuals and performance issues while the real problem goes unnoticed and unaddressed. Obviously it is vital for you to understand this important component and learn how to manage it properly so that you can unlock the full potential of your sales organization.

According to Dr. Deming, the critical component is your system, or process. For the purposes of our discussion, we’ll be focusing on the process that has to do with generating sales–your selling process. In my experience it doesn’t matter how talented, educated, or experienced your salespeople are, or how hard they work at it, there remains a very large gap between the actual results they will produce and the results they could have produced had someone been paying attention to process. In today’s ultra competitive business environment, where the margin between winning and losing is so slight, I am surprised at how many companies continue to ignore an area that holds such potential for drastic increases in productivity and bottom line results. [...]

How to Motivate Yourself to Make More Sales

Have you ever wondered, “Why are some people successful in sales careers, while other fail?” Does that mean that successful salespeople are more gifted or talented? Maybe to some degree, but even if you are extremely talented but lazy it won’t get you anywhere.

The reality is that the most successful people, not only in sales, but generally in life are working very hard to achieve their goals. They have a strong discipline and work on their goals no matter what.

Imagine a pyramid with the bottom representing a cold calls or other form of first contact with the prospect and the top being the actual sales made. The more room you have at the bottom, the more you can build on top of it.

Of course, your end goal is to get customers, but that is not what you should focus on – you should focus on hours, calls, demonstrations (if you want an A in an exam, you don’t sit home and think about getting an A, you spend time studying – actual work). The low of average will do the rest of the work here. [...]

Turn your employees into entrepreneurs

How can you make your life as a business owner or manager easier?

Imagine what your business would be like if your workforce continually amazed you by developing innovative and creative solutions to every-day problems.

Are your employees are your greatest asset? Are you maximizing their potential?

Quite often we allow people to get ‘stuck in a rut’ at work. The everyday grind becomes monotonous. People lose interest, disengage and morale lowers. This ultimately results in an unstable organisation that is underperforming.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs is a superb framework for helping to understand what motivates people. It shows us areas of importance for your employees and how moving up these needs can increase motivation and impact on the bottom line. [...]

Like any financial product there are downsides such as getting stuck in a cycle where you are unable to stop using this helpful product. This is why you have to choose the company that makes the best solution with regards to the help offered.

Factors supply you with cash based on your outstanding invoices. Say you have three clients who have not paid. Their invoices total 4000 pounds. A factor may offer you 85 to 90 per cent of the invoices’ total value. The 10 or 15 per cent they keep will be the payment or fee charged for extending you money. When payment comes through from your clients to pay the invoices, it all goes to the factor.

You can avoid the pitfalls in this situation by taking only a little bit of money at a time. The key is to know how to use money coming in to the best of your advantage and work with strong companies that can pay.

It’s Time to Design Your Company’s Annual Signature Event

What’s your Signature event? You know that thing that you host and people simply can’t wait to run out to their mailbox and get their invitation. Or do you not have one? As a business owner who is looking for unique, creative and inspirational ways to take your business out into the marketplace in a big bold way, hosting an annual event is an excellent area to start.

Hosting your very own signature event allows you to affirm your brand. What do you value? What do you stand for? For example, companies that are family centered tend to host events that are open to everyone. They want to see your children running around playing tag, tugging on the bottom of your skirt while you pour more lemonade. Companies that are not as “family centered,” may encourage you to leave everyone at home and come “stag.” Companies that are more altruistic tend to pull together events around giving back to the community. One of my former companies hosted a “Clean up the Bay” day. Those that promote leadership and team building are looking for opportunities for employees to be able to get out and work through opportunities that allow them to build those “leadership muscles.” [...]
